musical memories

It is amazing how hearing a song can put you instantly into an otherwise forgotten time and place.

It never leaves you either does it? No matter how much time passes, you still get the memory whenever you hear the music.

For me, hearing the B52’s Loveshack ALWAYS takes me back to a bar in Mayport, Florida – a somewhat large American Navy base.

It is the summer of 1990 and I’m a wee 19 year old serving aboard H.M.S. Ark Royal, the now sadly decommissioned British Flagship, and absolutely loving being young and single.

We were docked at the base for a couple of weeks and I’d already returned from a Greyhound bus trip to Orlando with my friends, somehow we had managed to convince some barmen we were 21, and had reaped the rewards for doing so.

It had been a great few days, apart from when I got chaffed in a somewhat embarrassing place while walking around Disney and wound up hobbling about as my friend helped himself to the girl I’d had my eye on.

Now we were back in the port, and out in a bar playing Spoof and Quarters. I was losing badly at the drinking games, but then Loveshack played and the whole place jumped up and danced and sang in one huge International moment of togetherness.

These were the best of days.

This was my time.

It also turned out to be a 150 Kilo sailor loving woman’s time too – but that is a different story, all I’m saying is Budweiser can eventually start making decisions for you if you get through enough pitchers of it.

Anyway – each and every single time I hear that tune, even after 21 years, I still remember that night – well some of it.

So what song instantly transports you somewhere, and where or when does it take you?

Lastly – as an experiment – I’m going to say this…

Oasis – Champagne Supernova.

Where are you now?

I LOVE that you mentioned Mayport. Some of my family lives there now...or just outside of it. My dad grew up as a Navy child and went to school in Mayport. The small elementary school is still there. I have a lot of great memories of Mayport and love that you brought them back!

Christina - it has been a few years but I can two step and used to be able to do the 'Sweet Home Alabama' - I'm very well traveled.

Kelley - class place - I had such a good laugh, can I just apologise now, in case I got you, or anyone you know pregnant while I was there :-)

Champagne Supernova is and iconic memory song.
Huge my first year of college.
When I hear it, It reminds me of drinking cheap alcohol and make bad decisions.
Ahh. Memories.

Also, there is a [terribly filthy yet somehow wonderful] song by Ginuwine called Pony, that brings back memories that I WISH I could get rid of.

It's funny how songs remind us of places or incidents. "Love Shack" reminds me of karaoke I did with car club friends at a holiday party. We were bad, but did not care! It was fun.

The Oasis isn't spurring anything for me, but everytime I hear Love Shack I can see my brother lifting weights in the basement...

I was actually going to write a post on this too, as it still amazes me how a song on the radio (or anywhere) can make you stop in your tracks and transport you back to that time again.

For me...

Fragma - Toca's miracle. This is when I sat in a pub for 8 hours (all day) with my first love, talking about everything under the sun!

Sweet female attitude - flowers. I done a certian 'thing' to this song!

All Saints - Pure shores. I played this everyday at college and thought I was the nuts back then!

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars. This was played at my Step Dad's funeral.

Music is so powerful! Thanks Glen, it is good to remember from time to time : )

I'm having a brain-fart over what song has recently transported me...maybe "Black Coffee in Bed," as Squeeze was my first concert. Love Shack itself transports me to a school dance. I'd always loved the B-52s before they'd become more mainstream with that album, so I remember squealing in surprised delight and running across the cafeteria with my high-hair flapping against my forehead to grab my BFF's arms and jump up and down with her. :)

Katie - ah alcohol, the Student's best friend.

OMS - the best Karaoke is always bad

Peal - is that a memory you want?

Soph - thanks, that's a great list

FM - I remember my Sister playing Rock Lobster constantly when I was young.
