kids never walk

I’ve just picked my boys up from school and they have reminded me, yet again, how much I miss being a kid.

The three years that separate them is a massive gap when it comes to how different they are, but still they capture everything that is great about not being an adult.

Daniel walks along chirpily telling me everything about his day. His excitement at his current Greek Mythology topic, bubbles out of him like an overfilled glass of lemonade. I hear all about a picture he has drawn of Medusa, as well as a step by step account of lunch (tomato pasta). He is clearly tired but happy because his picture came out well; all he is worrying about now is if he will be able to watch T.V. when he gets home. How nice is life when the only worry you have is whether or not you will be able to watch CBBC when you get home, rather than CBEEBIES when it’s Jamie’s turn to choose, or worse – NOTHING!

Jamie, meanwhile, really made me laugh. He is such a 5 year old sometimes! All the way home Jamie did anything, anything at all except walk; he ran, he hopped, he skipped, he bounced, he flew (like an aeroplane with his arms as wings), but he absolutely never walked.

Occasionally Jamie would bend down and pick up some snow. Holding snow in his hand would just make him laugh. The coldness and the wetness of the snow proved to be hysterical, especially when he then threw it at me. As suddenly as he had stopped to pick up the snow, Jamie would start skipping again, with absolutely not a single care in the world. How nice is that?

Maybe I can’t go back in time and be a child again, and perhaps it’s not a bad thing, mainly because there are some perks to being an adult that I’m not sure I want to give up (I get to choose what breakfast cereals we have – sometimes)! Luckily I don’t need a time machine – I’ve got my two boys instead!

I wish I had the energy my children have! I never walk either. Just, um, sit on my behind.

Bwahahahahahaha @ kbxmas.

My boy is like Jamie, never still. It's tiring to watch sometimes.

Sitting down is what bottoms were invented for, mainly.

reminds me of a very old joke that I shall make no effort to update!

Ian Botham ( notorious English International cricket player from long ago)was out jogging when he hears a bicycle bell ringing behind him and excited shouts of "Ian!"

on stopping Ian is most surprised to see a white Horse sat on the bike, waving an autograph book. "Ian - I'm your biggest fan -please can you give me your autograph?" the horse asks.

too stunned to comment, the autograph is given and the conversation discovers that the horses name is Derek, and loves cricket, even plays it himself now and again. Ian finds himself asking him to come and have a game the following Sunday.

On Sunday Ian arrives at the ground assuming that his ropey smokes had worked their magic and the whole thing had been a dream.

Derek was stood proudly at the gates wearing whites and pads, so Ian took him in a bowled some practice balls at him in the nets. Amazingly Derek bats each one first time, and so, still in a daze, Ian puts him on the team.

the first ball bowled at Derek gets hit for 6, the second is a 4! Ian is stood at the other end of the wicket and so when the third bowl is hit he calls for a run.

Ian runs as fast as he can but on arriving at the other end he finds Derek still stood there looking at him. Ian gets run out straight away and turns to Derek in a rage - "Why didn't you run?"

"Ian - if I could run I'd be at Ascot!"

I'm sure there are ways of updating that gag, or of translating it into Baseball or something but I reckon that no matter what names you use or what sport - it will only ever get the same amount of laughs - unfortunately !!

There are those who can run - and those who just don't!
